Sasha

Introducing Sasha. Here she is, out in Australia from July with Hachette Livre, hopefully to follow elsewhere at a later date.
The most immediate question I get asked is 'why switch from SF to fantasy?'
The answer is that I'm not really 'switching' anything. I write primarily about aspects of human civilisation that interest me. If this happens in the future, it'll be SF. If it happens in the past, it'll be fantasy. I've nearly finished the third book in the series, there's one more to go, then I'll be back to SF for a while, as I have some more future ideas I'd like to write. Where after that, I don't know, but the quality of character and story always interested me far more than the tropes of genre.
I think anyone who liked Cassandra Kresnov will like Sasha. Both heroic characters, for sure, but very different personalities. Sandy's very cool, but Sasha's a troublemaker. One day I'll have an argument with myself about who was more fun to write. Right now I can't decide.

Nice. Who did the cover?
Fella named Jeremy Reston did the illustration, and Luke Causby did the design. Scrubs up quite nicely on the actual book too, better than on the computer.
Hello!
Ooooh very nice indeed - I look forward to reading it.
When's the party?
;)
Party? Would you like to throw me a party, Bettina?
Ahh, about time you came out with a new book! :D
I was getting worried that the Cassandra Kresnov novels were the only ones you were going to write!
Glad to see the new book coming out. I'll certainly be out to get a copy as soon as it's released! :)
thanks!
I do know how to throw a good party :) Will our backyard suffice? Hahaha.
See you soon!
Just finished reading it. I like it so far ... so whenz the next one out?
anonymous preceding is me
Hi genavyv
They're due out at a rate of one a year in Australia. So July next year for the next one.
I'm looking forward to this new direction you're taking. Perhaps I might hint at Father's Day ;)
I know you mentioned you don't feel you've 'switched' and I agree - in the end a good story is a good story, but did you find changing your research from science (the future) to history challenging?
Cheers
[proceeds to bang head on desk] Another year? Oh boy, *that's* gonna be a long wait, and that's to not even mention having to wait for another. Gah. Oh well, such is the life of a reader who's just discovered a really fantastic new writer.
I picked up your Sasha the other day and immediately ended up on a short holiday up the west coast of Aus and spent most of the time my dad 4x4'd reading it. I'm really pleased to say that yours is one of the first books I've picked up and read from cover to cover very fast. I have some pretty exacting standards to reach for my reading-for-pleasure books and then tend to start and end with characters. You had absolutely no problem reaching and surpassing my requirements, so *thank you* for writing a book I happily became lost in.
You've got yourself a new faithful reader and once I find your other books (mmm, bookshops of Perth, you are no longer safe...again), I'm more than sure I'll be following that series too. I think what makes you a particular delight is the generosity with which you craft your world; I've lost count of the amount of times I've told that *this* is what makes a setting great. You have so vividly created and described a world and cultures without beating your readers over the head with broad descriptions, but instead slipping the details in the most unexpected of places. It's such a subtle skill, and yet, it's extremely rare, even and especially among published authors, so again, thank you for taking your projects to the publishers, Mr. Shepherd, you've done the writing world a great honour.
Hmm, don't you just hate the way the Internet has completely eradicated that line that once kept authors apart from readers and how it now has people addressing you as though they actually know you, all rather informally? :p
Anyways, many thanks from the West, I'll be keeping a steady eye out for the rest of your work. And when your next Trial novel comes out I may just have to beg, borrow, and steal in order to get it sent to me when I move to the States. ^^ You know...I think you are the first author I've ever actually written to. o.O Very weird. Anyway, I'm gonna shut up now and stop rambling. And try to post; if this bloody thing will let me.

I'm a disapointed fan. Disappointed that we have to wait till July 08 for a followup to Sasha.
I picked it up on a whim from Borders and love it. Have read it about 5-10 times already (cover to cover just this week) and it is getting very well worn.
Looking forward to the next one.
Cheers,
Ian
